From Pete, the President of Seacoast Marine Electronics:
Aboard RMS Franconia in the late 1960's there was no electronic
navigation except Radar, a Paper Chart Depth Recorder and an RDF (radio
direction finder). The ship's noon position was determined by a sextant and then
plotted on a paper chart. On days
when the sun was obscured, the noon position was calculated using DR (dead
reckoning). DR is based on the distance and course made good from the last good sextant
fix and is a computation based on heading from the ships gyro and speed
calculated from engine revolutions with an error correction for propeller "slip"........

We
recently installed a Raymarine C90W
Multifunction Display on board
this Little Harbor 46. This one Multifunction display can process
and display a Digital Radar picture, as well as Satellite differential GPS position fixes
on Navionics based electronic charts, layer a Radar image over the chart,
add AIS(automatic identification system) information as another layer,
display Sirius Satellite Weather Maps, Video Sounder
and Video Camera screens. In addition it can display data from Depth, Speed, Water Temperature and Wind sensors, as well as control the autopilot! Alas, it does not make Hot Chocolate for the
crew on the middle watch!

DEALERS FOR SCS PACTOR MODEMS
Aboard Franconia, we transmitted messages in morse
code at 25 words per minute. Radiotelephone calls were transmitted via SSB (Single Sideband)
at great expense using an ST1400 transmitter - (1,400Watts
PEP). Now, with the addition of an SCS Pactor Modem to your 150W PEP ICOM SSB installation, you can keep in
touch with family ashore via email!
